February News & President’s Message

Now that the January thaw is over……..snow is on the way. Let’s be positive and do whatever you do to encourage the return of winter conditions. Here is what is happening in February.

Tues, Feb. 3rd–Club Meeting will be NEW MEETING PLACE at Avondale Golf Course–7:00 pm.
Topic will be a travel log on Myanmar (Burma) by Kay Kindig. She toured there this past fall.

We were asked by Randy Folk, General Manager to see if we would consider Avondale as our permanent home for meetings, fund raising events, etc. We will have more information on our joint association after the board meets with him prior to the club meeting.

Directions: North on 95 and east on Miles Ave. Follow to the Porch Restaurant on the right and the next left is the entrance into Avondale. If you go to the T-intersection which is Lakeview–turn around.

Sat, Feb. 14th–4th of July Loppet–9 to 3:00
This is our first attempt to do a loppet which has become a popular ski event throughout the northwest and is of Scandinavian origin. Mt. Spokane has had one for the last 10 years and these are popular on the westside. Volunteers will be essential to carry this out at 4th of July. Other groups are being contacted to see if they can help out at different locations along the 7 and 14 mile course.

A large need is to have a food committee to purchase food, make soup, prepare snack items before the event and help serve hot food and beverages at a primary location and a 2 or 3 smaller stations with snacks and drinks along the trail. Please sign up at the club meeting or call Jim at 755-2575.

Feb. 27 – March 1
Seeley Lake Trip. Geoff  is organizing this trip which is a 3 day ski and snowshoe trip to the Swan Valley northeast of Missoula. There is a large house reserved and one or two smaller cabins if needed. The deadline to sign up and pay for the trip is at Tuesdays club meeting or make arrangements with Geoff  at 762-1246. The trip is around $80 and payment will be adjusted once a final count is made.

The Panhandle Nordic Club has a policy that if you have paid and are unable to go on a trip, it is the person’s responsibility to find someone to take their place. Refunds for the trip will not be given once the date has been closed for the trip.
