Notes of January 3, 2006 Meeting

The President, Jim McMillen, called the meeting to order a little after 7:00 PM. The business session started the meeting. Free ski day is this Saturday, January 7th. The treasurer reported on club finances. We are solvent. Members were urged to sign up to
man the warming hut for two-hour periods through the day. The club will serve refreshments and give education to skiing public if conditions permit.

Jackie Beery will soon be making her annual delivery of a care basket to the good folks at IDT who plow the Fourth of July Parking Lot. Evelyn and Donna volunteered to make cookies. Jackie will fill the basket with other goodies and deliver it to the IDT. Cookies should be delivered to Jackie by Thursday, January 12th.

A discussion of this year’s
Best Hand Poker ski followed. The president and others are trying to work out the issue of insurance. The Forest Service has required the club to have liability insurance in order to have the event at Fourth of July this year. If anyone has ideas on how to get insurance at a reasonable rate (one that does not eat up all the proceeds), please contact Jim.

Jim announced that the Rock Soup event is set for Saturday, February 26th. There is a sign up sheet for volunteers to cook. Hilma is keeping the website updated as the principle communication device used by the club. It has supplanted the newsletters of old. It also has a “blog” feature that allows each of us to record our comments concerning conditions at various areas where we ski. Hilma will notify members after major updates to the website.

The
Langlauf will be held February 12th at Mount Spokane.

The business meeting was closed and a video was presented on the American Birkebeiner Ski Race in Wisconsin. The film showed elements of the race, but went into the story behind the Birkebeiner Race in Norway that has its origins in a twelfth century tale of two strong skiers carrying the infant heir to the throne of Norway over the mountains to safety from rivals. How this tale has come down through the centuries in the art and culture of Norway and how Norwegian immigrants spread the race through other countries was covered in the video.

The meeting adjourned at 8:30 PM.
