March President’s Message

March is that month when the ski season wends down and we start to plan for the spring and summer. There is still a lot of good skiing left in March. Spring skiing is some of the best with a good snow pack at high elevation. Those good conditions should persist into April.

We have been expecting the Forest Service to place their travel plan for the Coeur d’Alene River Ranger District out for public comment for the past two months. It should appear soon. This document should contain the first Forest Service recognition of the Fourth of July area south of Interstate 90 as a non-motorized ski area in the winter and as having limited motorized access (Forest Road 614, Beauty Bay- Coeur d’Alene Mountain Road and Rose Creek Saddle – Killarney Lake Roads) during the summer and fall.

This designation should make it much easier to maintain and expand Fourth of July Park & Ski Area in the winter and leave an area for hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding with minimal motorized use during the summer months.

We will need your comments to the Forest Service supporting this designation, because there is a strong lobby that believes the entire forest should be open to motorized use, year around. If you like to ski, hike, bike, or ride horses free of motorized use this designation will provide you an area close to town with good parking. We were hoping that the Forest Service would release this document during January or February, but this has not occurred. We will notify you when the document does appear for public comment.

The March meeting is coming up on March 6th at 7:00 PM at the Fernan Ranger Station. The March meeting is our annual awards meeting. The Ya I Du Ski certificates and awards will be handed out to those who get your sheets to Roberta Truscott. Her number is 765-3115. She prefers them by Friday, March 2nd, but will slip them in for those who must get in some more skiing the weekend of March 3rd and 4th.

Liar's Contest: This is the annual meeting at which the best of the tall tales are told. So bring your imagination and a story to entertain the crowd. In past years we’ve heard poems (cowboy and classic), yarns, group presentations and some strange but true stories. Our Nordic friend Ole is sure to make an appearance. This meeting proves annually that a group of adults can still entertain themselves without an electronic gismo.

Before any of us know it, March will be gone, the grass will green up and our attention will move to the summer schedule of outings. The club is an all season group, but we celebrate summer by meeting on hiking trails, and canoe or bike trips. We set that spring and summer schedule at our April organizational meeting. If you want to participate in the summer trips, or have an idea for trips, mark our April 10th meeting on your calendar (this is the updated date).
