on short notice our Thursday hiking group is going to Waterton Canada from July 17-21. You need a valid Passport. We have rented a house for four nights ($183.00) per person. One person has dropped out of the house and we have one space to be shared with another women. (we could have one on a sofa in the living room as well! ) This is our third year of renting a house and it is always a lot of fun. The first night we have a potluck dinner to share and Mike Z. will discuss the hiking trails.
One provides their own breakfast, lunches and dinner. Often some go out to dinner at local restaurants. Call Joann Schaller at 208 818 9378 or Susan Lee 772 8410 for information.

Unfortunately, the North Idaho/Spokane weather did not cooperate today (Saturday, May 20) so the Little Spokane kayak/canoe trip was cancelled. Perhaps another time this attractive trip can be accomplished.

Come Join the Spring & Summer Planning Meeting, April 4th from 6:30-7:30 at Avondale

Bring your favorite hike, bike, kayak, canoe, bungee jumping suggestions for the Panhandle Nordic Club Activity Calendar. Day trip/activities usually start the end of April and run through mid-September on an every other week basis. We like to keep activities on the weekend and have an occasional event during the week. Also like to limit drive time to no longer than 1 ½ hours one way for day excursions. Overnight trips (one or two) are encouraged.

Trip leaders are responsible for writing up a description, level of difficulty/fitness level, miles, carpool information and anything that will be needed for the activity. Please send these to Karen Williams to be posted on the website and sent out to club members. We would like to offer different events and hiking trips, etc that haven’t been done by the club or at least not too recently. Rich Landers book 100 Hikes in the Inland Northwest is a great source of information. Some possibilities are:

–Bee Top new trail above Hope/Clark Fork

–Outing to park on South Hill in Spokane that presented at meeting Feb meeting

    –Bike/Hike Silver Mt/4th of July,

    –Lunch Peak

–Downtown CDA patio/garden walking tour/lake swim slated for end of July

–Trout Creek Wildlife Management Area, SE of Sandpoint

    –Scotchman Peaks area

It will be possible to get a dinner and/or snack from the restaurant. If you can’t attend the meeting, please email your ideas to Williamskaren322@gmail.com or jimmccda@gmail.com.

We will meet in the side room of the restaurant. It would be best to enter from the front door from the street side that is set back between the buildings. There will be a banquet going on in the main dining room at 6:00.

  11. Dwight McCain says:

Caution! A skier had the rear window and right rear door window smashed in the parking lot today, 12/31/16. It’s best to leave valuables home or keep them out of sight when coming up to ski. I guess they didn’t want the shovel that was in my car, just three cars down.

  12. Susan says:

I believe I lost a black dog leash with crossbones near Skywalker or Twisted. If anyone finds it, please let me know.

Completing Brush Removal of Fourth of July Park-N-Ski Trails
The Panhandle Nordic Ski & Snowshoe Club received a grant from Idaho Department Parks & Recreation’s (IDPR) Recreational Trails Program (RTP) to remove brush on key trails of the ski area. Two public meetings were held on the initial plan to complete 9.5 miles of brushing on the key trails of the ski area. Unfortunately the grant funding was only sufficient to complete 6.4 miles of the 9.5 miles requiring treatment. The Club is applying for additional funding to complete the final 3.1 miles. The Club is requesting $2,000 from the RTP and proposing to match this amount with $500 to complete brushing on the Elderberry, Swoop and Loose Moose Trails. The club is inviting public comment on the proposed completion of brushing. Please leave comments by replying below.

  17. John V. Anderson Jr. says:

I was skiing on the trails on Jan. 15 and at the top of Loose Moose I attempted to dislodge what I thought was ice on the trail map (intersection of Loose Moose and High Road). I either accidentally ripped the plastic covering on the map or it as already ripped in the center of the map. Either way you need a new map there that is more legible. Thank you for your fine service of these trails throughout the year. Also if anyone is interested in skate skiing out there, let me know and perhaps we can meet up sometime.

Is it possible to reserve the 4th of July warming hut for a small group activity? Does anyone know who I would contact with questions? It would be February 12 or 13.
    Thanks

    • Webmaster says:

There is no reservation process. While you can use the hut, you can not exclude others from using it. This is winter and shelter is provided for those wanting a dry place to get into for a while.

Dwight McCain just called. As of 9 am on December 26, Saturday, the entrance and parking lot have not been plowed. Geoff said he barely made it out of the parking lot Monday with our 4 wheel drive pickup. ITD’s priority is the highway, not the parking lot. More information later.

2015 Ski Swap at Kootenai County Fairgrounds is Nov 7 from 9-3. Good place to get used and reasonable ski equipment and/or sell your used equipment. Take items for sale to fairgrounds on Friday and pick up unsold items on Sunday.

Two spots are open for the Seeley Lake trip Sat-Sun, Sept 12 and 13. The lodge is much like Elkins or Hills Resorts on Priest Lake. Seeley is quite close to Missoula and the drive this time of year is beautiful. Please contact Geoff if you would like to make the trip @ Whitefish48@yahoo.com

Sat Jul 11 CDA North Fork River float update. Meet at 15th Street Cheery Hill parking lot behind the Fire Station for a 9:00 a.m. departure. We will plan on driving to the Country Lane Resort and use their shuttle to be taken up river for a 2 hour float. The shuttle will cost $5 and we will arrive back at the resort for refreshments. Weather will be a little cooler with sun and some clouds. The water will be warmer than usual. Big 5 was selling $30 float tubes for $20 last week. I do not know if there are any left. North 40 Outfitters at 170 E Kathleen advertised tubes for 6.95 and 14.95. Pumps at 3.95. Looking forward to a nice relaxing float. John/Susan 818-4466 cell, 772-8410 home.

The weather was perfect and 15 adventurers had a successful (no swampings) experience paddleing and goinging with the flow on the picuresque Little Spokane River. Reported wildlife included a deer (almost hit it), an otter, numerous birds including a Common Manganzer with her young, Killdeer, warblers, swallows, Red Wing Blackbirds, mallards, and others. Pictures on Facebook.

  24. John Lee says:

The weather looks good for June 13 for the Little Spokane canoe/kayak trip. We will depart from the Southwest corner of CDA Lowe’s at 0830 and should arrive at the launch site about 0930. We will launch from near St George’s School and take out near Nine Mile Road. With a stop halfway at the pictographs for a snack and a restroom, the trip should take about 3 hours. If someone wishes to meet at the launch site that is fine. We will than unload the canoes/kayaks and car shuttle as necessary. This is National get outdoors day so a Discovery Pass is not required. PFD’s required and Pets are not allowed. Kayaks can be rented at Tri-State Outfitters in CDA, Nine Mile Falls in Riverside State Park and other places. If someone needs help transporting one, let me know and I will try to coordinate some help.

Craigslist is sometimes a place. But what you need does depend on height and weight. Suggest you search Google and Youtube on how to buy cross-country ski equipment.
